Week 7

Photo of the week

New person (outside of DASL) that you met

This week, I met Alyx Kelii from the UNLV Global Department. He was one of the key organizers behind our baseball game outing and the Cowabunga Bay trip. We had a great chat where he shared helpful information about how international students can apply for a Nevada State ID and other useful resources. It was nice to talk to someone who plays such an active role in helping international students feel welcomed.

What institutional or American/Vegas cultural insight did you learn this week?

We had an exciting week filled with American experiences! I went to my first live baseball game, and it was great to see how passionate people are about the sport. The crowd, the food, and the overall energy made it feel like a true piece of American culture. Later, we visited Cowabunga Bay Water Park, which was a fun way to cool off and experience summer fun the American way. One of the most educational trips this week was to the Amazon Fulfillment Center (VGT1). It was amazing to see how smoothly the robots moved around with shelves on them, managing inventory, picking items, and working alongside human employees. It gave me a real look at how robotics and automation are shaping modern logistics.

What did you learn about yourself?

This week, I realized how much I enjoy seeing technology in real-world action. Watching the robots at Amazon made me more curious and excited about the future of robotics in industry. I also found that being part of events like the water park trip and baseball game helps me recharge and connect better with others. I’m starting to appreciate how balancing fun and learning helps me grow both personally and professionally.

What is the status of your technical projects and what skills did you learn?

This week, I successfully 3D printed the first prototype of my screwdriver case, which I had been designing in Fusion 360. Seeing the physical product in my hands was a proud moment. I also learned how to assemble and animate parts in SolidWorks, which helped me understand how the design will function in real life. These new skills will be helpful for future prototypes and presentations. Overall, it was a very productive and rewarding technical week.
