Week 7
Photo of the week
I went to Red Rock with my friends from the Buddy Program. The scenery was so unique and different from Korea that it felt like I had stepped into a storybook. Since we left early in the morning, I felt a bit tired at first. However, the more we hiked, the more energized and refreshed I felt. The thrilling heights and breathtaking views were absolutely amazing.
New person (outside of DASL) that you met
I met Jose, Gabe, and Dominic and we went to Red Rock together. I'm so grateful to them for joining us on the trip, even though they had work to do in the evening. The world inside the DASL is joyful because of the lab members, but the world outside the lab is fun because of these friends. Jose is amazing at hiking and good at taking photos. Gabe was incredibly kind, and his constant smile made me happy too. Dominic shared snacks with us and I've never had such delicious apples before.
What institutional of American/Vegas cultural insight did you learn this week?
On Saturday evening, I left the lab to go home and saw a fire near the UNLV Surplus Center. One of my lab members immediately called 911, and I was able to witness the fire trucks arriving and the firefighters extinguishing the fire. Since I had never called 911 myself or seen a fire being extinguished up close, it was a very impressive experience. In particular, seeing the rapid response after the call made me realize how systematically the emergency response system operates in the U.S. Experiencing such dynamic situations made me think, “This is America!!”
What did you learn about yourself?
Seeing and experiencing new things is so much fun. Meeting new people, visiting new places, and trying things I've never done before bring me so much joy. I love the excitement and freshness that come from stepping into the unfamiliar.
What is the status of your technical projects and what skills did you learn?
I have learned how to create a custom robot in the Webots simulator. I'm working on building a Domabot using Lego NXT. Since Webots doesn't support STEP files, I used Fusion360 to adjust the size and convert them into .obj files and imported the 3D model into Webots. I calculated the precise positions and connected the NXT brick, motors, and wheels to make the Domabot's structure.
