Week 3

Photo of the week

I saw a basketball game which was held in my school, UNLV. Since it was my first time to watch a basketball game in person, everything felt very exciting and new. The scale was much bigger than I expected and there were so many people. Cheering for our school's players together in the crowd was incredibly enjoyable.

New person (outside of DASL) that you met

while watching the basketball game, I met 4 people sitting behind me. We took photos together and cheered enthusiastically. I also introduced Korea to them. Since they loved basketball, I could see how passionate they were about supporting their team. I learned their cheer chants and we even appeared on the big screen together. Knowing the cheers made the game truly exciting to watch!!

What institutional of American/Vegas cultural insight did you learn this week?

This week, I studied at the library for the first time and was surprised by how different atmosphere was from my university's library. At my school, people in the library are completely silent so that people who read and study can focus. However, at the UNLV library, I saw people studying while talking with each other. There were even big whiteboards where they can share problems and figure out solutions together. I realized that a more open and relaxed library environment can also be nice.

What did you learn about yourself?

I found that my physical endurance is really bad. Even though I didn't do anything special, just attending classes and studying in the lab, I feel exhausted at every night. By 11PM, I get so sleepy that I can't keep my eyes open. I thought that I need to build up my physical strength to learn and experience more, so I signed up for the gym in school and started working out. I thought I was really going to die trying to work out at first. However, I felt proud more energized after working out. Also, I could manage my time more efficiently. I thought that I've been too lazy, using the excuse of adjusting to a new environment. From now on, I want to live more healthy and meaningful life.

What is the status of your technical projects and what skills did you learn?

I learned how to use Inkscape for creating designs for laser cutting and Fusion360 for CNC design and simulation. To get hands-on experiences with machines, I created drawings, measured lengths, and ran simulations. I realized that thorough preparation beforehand is crucial to safely operate the equipment and achieve perfect results.
